It was a dark and stormy night ....
Different author.
Seriously, My coldain shawl crawl was a VERY GOOD learning experience. I read a lot about it, but it never truly gets real until you do it.
I started out bored one Saturday morning around 11:00am. Not many guildy's on and LDON's were sucking wind so I decided to start my shawl crawl.
I started by sending out /ooc in POK and the General chat channel and acquired a full group to do quest.
We had 2 Clerics, 1 Bard, a Rouge, a Druid, and a Chanter. A little poor in the DPS section but I thought OK we can handle it with Mezz and 2 Healers.
We get a port from our Druid to Iceclad and we run over to the General to do the hails. Give him the loot and away the little guy goes across Iceclad.
Our Druid was in wolf form and the General immediately attacked him.
Lesson learned - SOW all around
On our first wave (wolves) we were able to fight the wolves. We engaged the first one that the General attacked. Things were going as planned. Chanter mezzed, bard was tank, we killed first wolf 3 more to go. After the kill the General then proceeded on his walk. Unsure of what to do, I went after him and let him use me as a punching bag while the rest of the group killed off the mobs.
Lessons learned - 1) The General can use you as a punching bag and you can maintain 100% health with celestial heal. 2) The Mobs have big time hit points and DPS would come in handy.
After wave 1 the chanter mem-blurred General and away he went to wave 2. We kept pace killed the occasional aggro from wandering mobs.
Wave 2
A little bit harder, A lot harder since we only had 1 dps. We managed to persevere and kill all the mobs. Again we had to have the General attack one of us or he would have taken off. Realizing that it only gets worse from here we start sending tells everywhere for help.
Lesson Learned - DPS, DPS , DPS do the damage and take them down fast.
- Thanks to Eaden who heard my plea for help and logged onto wizzy and was coming in to Icelad to help.
Wave 3
Well the group was hanging back a little and I got a little worried so I went in and tried to keep the General alive. Big Mistake I died In about 2 minutes. Couldn't get a heal on me. Don't know what really happened much in wave 3 except what I could see in tells from POK.
Eadin also paid the ultimate price on trying to find us. Healer rezzed us, we got KEI from chanter, got additional help from the other toons So we had to start a raid. Total group size went up to 10 people.
Lessons Learned - 1) 2 Clerics are very nice to have. 2) Clerics can't handle a lot of damage. 3) Giants don't mezz and you have to handle them one by one. 4) General Heals very rapidly walking from wave point to wave point
The wait after wave 3 was rather long since 3 of us died during this wave. We constantly had trash aggro and the General kept on attacking people medding so our bard took the General away so we could heal/med in peace. Chanter mem-blurred and away we went.
Wave 4
As we walked to wave 4 we had little aggro but not much. I decided to scout ahead. Who should I see on the horizon. A big a$$ turtle named Lodizal. An extra bonus! We had someone hold the General in place. (i.e. become the General's punching bag) while our Bard brought Lodizal to us. We started to pound on Lodi. On the way Eaden landed a nuke and before I could get a Cheal on him he was sitting in POT again. After Lodi death and Eaden rez we split the loot. Eaden scored with part four of a map to iceclad (Eyepatch of Plunder quest) and Knotted Turtleshell Ring (EB item).
We then proceeded to Wave point 4 which was wolves and mezzable so this one went very well.
Lessons Learned - 1) Sometimes you are lucky as heck. 2) wave 4 is mezzable and pretty easy compared to 3.
Wave 5
Luckily we got a high powered DPS person before we hit wave 5. Wave 5 was all giants. The main tank was able to hold all aggro and the other healer in raid was Chealing him along the way. I held General in fight and healed the others in my group. We proceeded to work our way through the giants. Eaden got an Ice Forged Helmet as a drop.
Lesson Learned - A proper group can make a difference.
We proceeded to the Gnome camp without picking up a single snow cougar and ka-CHING!!
The blessed shawl was mine.
So.. my next time I would need 2 clerics, 1 chanter and a person that can cast a decent DS. 4 to 6 people with lots of DPS would also be great.
Went on a LDON with my Cleric and used that bad boy all the way to 54 !! 1 more level till ornate !
